HISTORIC CEMETERIES AS OUTDOOR MUSEUMS
We encourage families and classes to get into the cemeteries within their communities and put archaeological principles to the test. This presentation will cover iconography, dating of headstones, and change of style over time (seriation) along with lessons in cemetery preservation. This event is free and open to the public.

Join FPAN and the City of St. Augustine Archaeology Program to learn about the science and art of 3D modeling and printing! After a short lecture, participants can paint an artifact model from the City’s digitized collection.

Florida's First People
Humans have lived in Florida for over 14,000 years! Archaeologists work to reconstruct these past cultures and the environments people relied upon for food, shelter, and more. This presentation takes the audience through a timeline of cultural practices and materials to explore Florida’s indigenous peoples, from the earliest known sites, through millennia of cultural shifts and environmental changes, up to the arrival of the Europeans and today’s thriving communities.


VELDA MOUND HISTORIC MARKER DEDICATION
The fifth of a projected ten historical markers announced for Tallahassee’s bicentennial and sponsored by the Tallahassee Historical Society will be unveiled Wednesday March 5 at 4 pm at the Velda Mound Park on Baldwin Street South. The marker, done in cooperation with the Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) commemorates the Fort Walton-era village site whose sole remnant is large Native-American platform mound. Velda Mound was built in approximately 1450 and was occupied until about 1625. The Velda Mound marker is one of three historical markers focusing on Native American life.
