UWF 2023 Field School Review and Goals for 2024
Presented by University of West Florida Department of Anthropology's Dr. Ramie Gougeon, Dr. Greg Cook and Dr. John Worth
The UWF Department of Anthropology will be offering two archaeological field schools in Summer 2024. The terrestrial archaeology field school will be focusing on surveys of the university campus and beyond, while the maritime field school will undertake excavations of Luna shipwrecks that were postponed in the Summer of 2023! Faculty from the department will be presenting highlights from past field seasons alongside plans for the summer season to come.
This summer marks Dr. Ramie Gougeon's 11th field school with UWF. His projects frequently encounter sites from across the long prehistory of our region as well as historic sites from the colonial to modern eras. Dr. Gougeon teaches our students about research methods typical of contractual archaeology as that is where many will find employment after graduating from UWF.
Dr. Greg Cook has assembled a team to begin the long-awaited exploration of the third of Luna's ships to be discovered by UWF maritime archaeologists in Pensacola Bay. Dr. Cook will give a summary of fieldwork on the Luna fleet to date. We also think members of PAS may be interested in hearing about the complicated process of securing a permit to conduct this summer's excavations!
Even though Dr. John Worth and his team will be out of the field this summer, that doesn't mean that work on the Luna Settlement site is stopping! Dr. Worth will hit the highlights of UWF's exploration of the Luna site to date. He will also fill us in on the planned analyses and write-ups their research grant will be supporting this summer.
